Cultivating
Character
Studies show that a well-conceived, completely integrated character development program is better at preventing "risky" behavior than any behavior-based prevention program.
The focus of counselors and esteem-building program is often on building identity based on the activities we participate in (sports, skills, hobbies, academics). Although WHAT we do is an important part of our lives, it is WHO we are that builds authentic self-esteem and builds identity.
Often
building a Culture of Character is seen as the key to
achieving a peaceful, just society. The debate has focused
on values. What are the important values to teach? How do
people learn about or, more importantly, learn to live
those values? That debate can be contentious as the
importance of specific values vary from individual to
individual and culture to culture.
What is the solution to the problem of
diminishing values?
The debate needs to rise above values which
are individual or cultural. The solution is one step deeper
and lie in virtues. Virtues are universal, innate qualities
of character. They are important to all cultures and
faiths.
